Cover Letters
Cover letters work the same way as resumes: keep the ones you have, edit them by hand, or have the app write a new one for a specific job.
The Cover Letters Page
- Cover Letters - The panel at the top lists your saved letters. Select one to open it, rename it, or delete it.
- + New Cover Letter - Creates an empty letter and asks for a name, for example Optimized - Acme Corp - May 2026.
- Import from File - Loads a letter from a JSON file you exported earlier.
- Cover Letter Editor - Opens the editor where the app writes and rewrites cover letters. Create universal and job-targeted cover letters and optimize existing cover letters.
Editing a Cover Letter by Hand
- The letter is a single editable text - Select a saved letter and its text appears in the Selected Cover Letter panel, where you can rewrite any part of it directly.
- Save Changes - Stores your edits back to the saved letter. If a save fails, the button stays available so you can retry.
- Naming a new letter - A newly generated letter is saved with Save to My Cover Letters and the name you give it.
Using the Cover Letter Editor
As in the resume editor, use the Optimize button to start generating a new cover letter. It becomes Optimize for Job once a target job is attached.
- Optimize an existing letter - Select a saved letter. The panel shows it as Selected Cover Letter and Optimize rewrites that letter in place. Save Changes keeps the result.
- Create New - Choose the Create New row and click Optimize. Before it writes anything, a Select Highlights for Cover Letter dialog asks you to choose the 3 to 10 achievements and 1 to 5 skills the letter should lead with. Generate Cover Letter then produces the letter from your profile alone.
- Create New + Add Target Job - With Create New selected, click + Add Target Job. Select a job from an existing application, or paste a new job description. Optimize for Job then writes a letter aimed at that role and company.
As with resumes, job targeting applies to a new letter. A saved letter is polished in place, so the target job button is unavailable while one is selected. The highlight step is specific to a generic letter: attach a target job and the letter is written from the posting instead, so nothing has to be picked by hand.
Editing with the Assistant
- Cover Letter Editor Assistant - The chat panel sits beside the letter while you work in the editor.
- Ask for changes in plain language - For example, "tighten the second paragraph", "sound more enthusiastic about the mission", or "keep it under 300 words". Press Send, or Enter to send and Shift and Enter for a new line.
- You can skip the questions - While the assistant asks clarifying questions, choose Skip to move straight to the draft.
Job-Targeted Cover Letters
- Two ways to make one - From the editor with Create New + Add Target Job, or from an application with Generate Cover Letter on its Generated Documents card.
- Questions about gaps - The app compares the posting with your profile and asks about anything it cannot match, so you can fill in experience your profile does not yet capture.
- It asks what excites you about the job- Cover letters also ask what excites you about the job and why you want to work at that company. This answer is what makes the letter read as genuine rather than generic, so it is worth writing in your own words.
- Answers are remembered - Your responses, are kept for that job, so re-running the generation does not ask the same questions again.
- The result is a new letter - The targeted letter is saved separately, leaving your other letters untouched.
Cover Letter Troubleshooting
- The panel is empty - A letter appears once you select one or choose Create New, add a job if you want one, and click Optimize. Before that the panel explains what to do.
- It says no model is available - Open Settings, find Local AI Model size, and download a model, or wait for the background download to finish.
- The letter is too long or too short - Ask the assistant in plain language, for example, to cut it to three paragraphs or to add a sentence about a specific project.
- You need a file to send - Open the letter, or the application it belongs to, and export it as a PDF or Word document.
